Police have closed a road in Durham after a large sinkhole appeared in the middle of a busy road.
The B6310 at Longclose Bank at Medomsley Bank in Consett has been closed due to the appearance of a large sinkhole on the A694 on Tuesday afternoon. The road has been closed by Durham Constabulary and will remain shut until an investigation can take place by Durham County Council.
Police officers at the scene of the sinkhole, which is around 4ft wide, have asked drivers to avoid the A694 from Rowlands Gill to Shotley Bridge.
A Durham Constabulary spokesperson said: "Police currently have the road closed at the bottom of Medomsley Bank (B6310/ Longclose Bank) due to a large sinkhole. This will remain closed until the council attend the scene.
"Please use alternative routes; there is already a large build up of traffic in the area."
Officers from Durham Constabulary are currently turning drivers away from the scene on the A694.
The force did not reveal when Durham County Council are expected to carry out an inspection or when the road was likely to reopen.
