Warning over national problem which contributed to teen girl's death

The death of a teenage girl has been partly blamed on a national shortage of specialists in the haematology field.

Katie Wilkins, from Warrington, died in Alder Hey Children's Hospital in July 2020 after being diagnosed with Acute Promyelocytic Leukaemia (APML) and associated coagulopathy - a bleeding disorder. Previously to this, the 14-year-old had visited Warrington Hospital on multiple occasions in October before she collapsed at home on October 26, reports CheshireLive.

She was taken to hospital again where she had blood tests. But the teenager's condition continued to deteriorate and she suffered a catastrophic intracerebral haemorrhage on July 29.
