Metro passengers will see disruption to their journeys for two weekends as lines are set to close for essential replacement works, ahead of new trains arriving.
The major upgrades mean there will be no service this weekend (January 21-22) between Four Lane Ends and South Gosforth, and South Gosforth to Airport. And from February 11-12 no trains will run between Four Lane Ends and Haymarket.
Stadler, the Swiss train manufacturer who are building the new Metro depot on behalf of Nexus, need to replace track, overhead lines and signals at the eastern end of the depot site. Nexus, which runs the Metro, will also be carrying out improvement works.
“A huge amount of work is being packed into these two weekends as we look to complete the next phase of the £70m Metro depot project,” said Metro infrastructure director Stuart Clarke.
“We always try to work at weekends in order to minimise the amount of disruption to customers, and I apologise in advance for any inconvenience these line closures cause.
“Replacement buses will be provided and our advice is allow plenty of extra time if you’re making a journey through the affected area on either of the two weekends when there are closures of line.”
A replacement bus, the 900, will operate during the work period calling at all affected stations. Passengers, where possible, can also get into Newcastle by travelling on Metro via Wallsend.
