Warning of Metro disruption this weekend as new signalling system installed

Metro passengers have been warned they face disruption while a new signalling system is installed in the new £70 million Stadler depot.

There will be no Metro service between Jesmond and South Gosforth/Four Lanes End until around 6.15pm on June 24. There will also be no service between South Gosforth and Airport all day on June 24 and 25.

Between June 23 and 30 some first and last train times will be different to normal. Replacement bus service 900 (Haymarket to Four Lane Ends) and 901 (Haymarket/South Gosforth to Airport) will be in operation during the works and will call at or close to all Metro stations affected.

There will also be an express replacement bus service X901 which will serve Haymarket and Airport only every 30 minutes between 7am and 10pm on June 24 and June 25.

Due to escalator improvement works at Haymarket Metro station, the station will be exit only, this means bus replacement service 900 and 901 will additionally call at Monument to drop off only on June 24 and pick up passengers at Haymarket.

Bus replacement service X901 will operate between Haymarket and Airport only on both June 24 and 25 due to bus stop constraints in Newcastle city centre. Metro services will resume between Jesmond and Four Lane Ends at approximately 6.15pm on June 24.

Metro services between South Gosforth and Airport will resume on June 26 Between June 23 and 30, some first and last Metro train times will be different to normal. All timetable information is now live on the Nexus website and the POP app will show the amended timetable information.

A Nexus spokesman said: "Due to the number of events taking place around Tyne and Wear this summer, careful consideration has been taken to choose a date which balances the impact on our customers with the need for essential works.

"We have programmed part of the works to allow the reopening the line between Jesmond and Four Lane Ends to assist moving crowds away from The Hoppings on Saturday night.

"There is no good time to close a large section of the network and I apologise in advance for the inconvenience this will cause.

"This work will benefit the system for the future and I assure you that we will do all we can to keep any disturbance to an absolute minimum."

The Stadler depot, which is close to completion, will serve as a home to the new Tyne and Wear Metro train fleet. Metro owner and manager Nexus has ordered 46 new trains from Stadler who are delivering the depot as well under the £362m project.
