Warning issued to UK holidaymakers travelling to Spain

A warning has been issued to holidaymakers planning a trip to Spain.

Winter is upon us as freezing conditions have arrived in the UK at the start of December. Many people across the country will be planning Christmas breaks to enjoy some winter sun over the festive period.

However, travellers' plans could be rocked with chaos as Spanish airports face a series of strikes this Christmas. Crews from the airport authority AENA are planning to walk out over the festive period including around New Year - as The Daily Star reports.

Strikes are set to take place on December 22, 23, 30 and 31 as well as January 6 and 8. The walkouts could cause “chaos” according to the union CCOO – and every Spanish airport is expected to be affected.

Over 10,000 workers will strike due to a dispute over productivity rewards. Staff claim that air traffic is now back to pre-pandemic levels, with some airports even thought to be seeing more passengers than in 2019.

If a resolution isn’t reached then the strikes could carry on through the start of 2023 and even into Easter, meaning those planning half term breaks could also face delays and cancellations. The union stated that the strikes could "could plunge Spanish airports into chaos in the middle of the Christmas holidays."

It said: "The distribution of dividends to private shareholders has been authorised and the workers of the AENA group demand, therefore, the recovery of what we are owed.

"Despite the good words of the AENA group and the Ministry of Transport, the delay in reaching an agreement is causing a lot of uneasiness among the workers and the unions present at the negotiating table."

Always be aware of current travel advice from the FCDO before flying and check that you have appropriate travel insurance to ensure you don’t miss out on your holiday or any refunds.
