Warning fired as youths found swimming in Creggan Country Park reservoir "unsupervised"

A warning has been issued to parents to talk to their children after a group of youths were found swimming in a Northern Ireland reservoir this week.

Sinn Féin Councillor Emma McGinley has raised concerns following reports of young people swimming unsupervised at Creggan Reservoir after the park has closed.

It comes as the region basked in sunshine and warm temperatures this week - with temperatures soaring to over the mid-20Cs since Sunday (August 7).

Cllr McGinley said: “There has been reports of young people having breached the gates of Creggan Reservoir and swimming in the water unsupervised.

“This is a massive safety issue. I would urge parents to speak with their children and teenagers about the dangers that come with swimming here unsupervised.”

Meanwhile, earlier this week RNLI Lifeguards made an appeal to the public after several people had to be saved from rip currents in Northern Ireland.

Karl O’Neill, RNLI Lead Lifeguard Supervisor said: ‘Sea swells are expected particularly along our Causeway Coast beaches in the coming days which will intensify the risk of people getting into difficulty in rip currents.

"It is imperative that people planning on visiting the coast to enjoy this beautiful weather do so safely by visiting a lifeguarded beach and by ensuring they swim between the red and yellow flags only, which mark the safest stretch of water and the area our lifeguards patrol."
