Warning as used needles and condom wrappers found in park

A large amount of used needles and condoms were found near a nursery and football pitch in a popular Liverpool park.

The Friends of Wavertree Botanic Park said a member had stumbled across the pile of used needles in the park while litter picking on Sunday, February 26. The organisation posted a number of pictures that showed several needles, condom wrappers and clear plastic bags.

The organisation's Instagram page said the rubbish had been found in the maintenance area of the gardens. A spokesperson wrote: "Another syringe with the needle was found and removed, together with 50 cigarette butts in the car park. The syringe was carefully handled and put in a coffee cup closed with its lid and placed in a bin."

They added: "Over three months of weekly litter picking in the garden and park this is the first time the group has seen syringes. The reason could be the nicer weather and longer light hours. Not nice at all.

"This morning, as [with] many other Sunday mornings, the park was full of kids playing football. Please Liverpool City Council, can the nursery in the park and the football organisers be informed of this issue to keep everybody safe."

The Friends of Wavertree Botanic Park also asked Liverpool City Council's Streetscene team if its service could remove the pile of needles. The council's team, which holds the contract for park, garden and cemetery maintenance, acknowledged the rubbish on the Instagram post.

The ECHO approached Liverpool City Council for a comment.
