Knowsley Council has issued a warning after millions was set aside for the borough’s “deteriorating” roads.
A total of £6.3m is to be spent on highways schemes across the borough after Knowsley Council was awarded the funding from the Combined Authority.
Part of a £50m part awarded to the wider city region to the Combined Authority by the government last year, nearly a quarter of Knowsley’s funds will be spent on structural maintenance along the M62 in works totalling over £1.5m.

£2m is due to be spent along the A562 and A561 in Halewood, also on structural maintenance.
Higher Road in Halewood will see nearly £2.5m of funding, which will be used to resurface the carriageway and create a new cycle way, in works that will be carried out in two phases.
According to a report produced ahead of meeting of Knowsley’s cabinet tomorrow, November 16, there will also be two tranches of work carried out in Roby. This will involve resurfacing at Roby Road, costing £225k and drainage works at Junction 5 of the M62, costing in the region of £1.5m.
The report states the schemes have been chosen due to the existing poor conditions on the roads, adding: “It should be noted that, even bearing in mind this allocation in funding, the Borough’s highway asset is continuing to deteriorate.
“Following the impact of a decade of national austerity, the level of available capital and revenue funding is insufficient to maintain the asset’s current condition.”
Members of Knowsley’s cabinet are expected to approve the plans tomorrow, with the works in Roby projected to start from 2023 and the other schemes due to take place from 2024 onwards.
