Warning as Highway Code rule change could see dog owners hit with £5,000 fine

Dog owners could be hit with a fine if they don't make sure their pet is restrained when travelling in a car, according to a rule change in the Highway Code.

Studies indicate that many drivers are not familiar with the Code, especially the changes relates to travelling with dogs and other pets in your vehicle that were introduced at the start of last year. Rule 57 states the steps motorists must take to ensure the safety of both the animal and anybody else travelling in the car.

In full the rule states: "When in a vehicle make sure dogs or other animals are suitably restrained so they cannot distract you while you are driving or injure you, or themselves, if you stop quickly. A seat belt harness, pet carrier, dog cage or dog guard are ways of restraining animals in cars."
