A man trying to destroy evidence linked to a shooting in Australia inadvertently set himself on fire and left behind crucial evidence that would help police apprehend him and his accomplice, according to a report.
The incident began when a targeted shooting took place on Wednesday in Auburn, a city near Sydney, Australia. Multiple shots were fired at three people, striking a car and a house, resulting in no injuries, ABC Australia reported.
approximately 20 minutes after the shooting, police were called to the scene of a burning vehicle, and found surveillance footage which showed an individual igniting the car in Carramar, around a 20 minute drive from the location of the shooting.
In the video, the masked offender tried to incinerate the getaway vehicle, but ultimately lit himself on fire. Authorities identified the man in the footage as the key suspect in the shooting and have launched a search for him.
While police have not released many details about the case, they did confirm to have gathered substantial evidence linking the suspects to the shooting and the fire.
"My message to those two people is we're going to catch you," Detective Superintendent Rob Toynton said. "We're going to come after you, because we've got strong evidence which is going to link you to the scene. So best option is come forward now."
