WHEN the SNP, Sinn Fein and Plaid Cymru came together in Cardiff on Monday to declare "Westminster's time is coming to an end" and sign an historic memorandum of understanding on their common goals of independence, right-wing media outlets quickly went on the attack.
GB News blasted "Is the United Kingdom breaking up?" across the screen as former Conservative Minister Tom Pursglove spoke of the "irony" of Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland wanting to leave the UK and join the EU.
The presenters chuckled too as Pursglove claimed the party leaders were all saying "isn't Donald Trump wonderful?" following his intervention on Irish reunification. The only person that actually commented on this was Michelle O'Neill who simply said his comments in favour of Irish unity showed the debate is “very much alive”.

Meanwhile, journalist Stephen Daisley was so infuriated by the event he called for legislation to be introduced to make it impossible for any country to leave the Union.
"The Commons should legislate to render Great Britain constitutionally indivisible," he wrote.
Talk TV, meanwhile, went for probably the most extreme headline of the day with "Abolition of Britain" blasted across the channel as Andrew in Halifax compared Brits who want to leave the UK to those who march in support for the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps.

A pretty furious reaction to the simple concept of the right to self-determination.
But when the residents of an Oxfordshire village pipe up and hold an independence referendum because of plans to house more than 1000 asylum seekers nearby, everyone is suddenly very understanding on these channels.
Residents of Piddington will be holding a symbolic vote on whether their village should become independent from the UK amid a proposal for 1256 male asylum seekers to be moved to a nearby military base.
Talk TV covered this on Tuesday with the headline "The Villagers' Revolt" across the screen as well as "Piddington Power".
GB News also went big on the matter declaring "Piddington Holds Referendum Over Migrants".
Having been quite quick to slag off talk of self-determination from the devolved nations, when an English village is facing having to protect "indigenous white women", as Reform MP Sarah Pochin put it, suddenly it's a legitimate topic to be discussing.
There were also plenty of these media outlets who were quick to suggest this meeting in Cardiff didn't mean anything and was just symbolic.
So will a major piece of legislation be quickly drawn up should the few hundred people of Piddington opt to secede? I'm sceptical, but given the level of legitimacy given to this pretend poll by the right-wing media, I guess we'll see!
So to conclude, if you want your support for independence to be taken seriously, move to a quaint suburb of Oxford. Simples.
