Want a Big Family? These States Make It Hardest to Afford
A family’s cost of raising children can vary dramatically by state, with 2026 estimates ranging from about $202,000 to more than $412,000 over 18 years for one child – Shutterstock

Wanting a big family can sound simple until the grocery list starts looking like a small catering order. The cost of raising one child already varies dramatically across the United States, and adding several children can magnify the pressure on housing, child care, food, transportation and health expenses.

A 2026 LendingTree analysis puts the average cost of raising one child to age 18 at $303,418 nationwide. But geography changes the math considerably. That does not mean a family with four children will spend exactly four times the listed amount. Some expenses rise with each child, while others require the family to make a much bigger jump in spending.
