The trial against Tampa Bay Rays shortstop Wander Franco, who faces charges of sexually abusing a minor, sexual and commercial exploitation against a minor, and human trafficking, has been postponed. The trial was scheduled to resume on June 2, 2025, in Puerto Plata, Dominican Republic.
The postponement came after Dominican judge Yacaira Veras granted a request from prosecutors due to the absence of key witnesses in the case. Franco's legal team had requested the court to reconsider the delay, citing his upcoming obligation to report to spring training in mid-February.
However, the judge ruled that Franco must adhere to the trial schedule, continue his conditional release from detainment, and remain in the country during this period.
Prosecutors presented documents to the judge in July, alleging that Franco, through his mother, transferred 1 million pesos (approximately $17,000) to the minor's mother on January 5, 2023, in exchange for consent to the abuse. The minor's mother is facing charges of money laundering and is currently under house arrest.
Authorities claim that the minor's mother, previously a bank employee, began living a lavish lifestyle and acquiring assets using the funds received from Franco. During raids on her residence, investigators reportedly found $68,500 and $35,000 that they allege were provided by Franco.
The trial has garnered significant attention and will resume in June 2025 as the legal proceedings continue to unfold.
