Eco-activist group The Tyre Extinguishers has targeted Walthamstow in their latest wave of action against high-polluting vehicles.
Despite the borough being one of London’s most pro-cycling areas, the group revealed 40 SUVs had been targeted in their latest overnight raid.
Claiming they cannot “be stopped”, The Tyre Extinguishers also struck the affluent area of Primrose Hill as part of a coordinated attack which also saw incidents in Dundee and the Hague in Holland.
Commenting on their latest protest, the group said in a post on Friday morning: “Working class people are being pushed out of Walthamstow by rapidly increasing rent and house prices, more and more SUVs are on the roads.
“SUVs are a symbol of the rich taking over our city."
Cllr Khevyn Limbajee, Councillor for Grove Green, told the Standard: “We are in contact with the local police and are awaiting an update on what action they will be taking.
“This is criminal damage and should not be tolerated. Those committing these acts must realise that this will do nothing to bring about the fundamental changes we need to tackle the climate crisis.”
Although the group targeted the northeast London borough, Waltham Forest council is one of three involved in Sadiq Khan’s ‘Mini-Holland’ programme.
As part of the £100million investment, the borough - along with Enfield and Kingston - will transform itself into a cycling hub.
Changes within the plans include redesigned junctions which are safer for cyclists and pedestrians, segregated cycle lanes on busy roads and reductions in the amount of traffic using residential streets - specifically areas such as Walthamstow Village.
Earlier this month, the group said they had targeted 3,000 vehicles across the UK since March.
A spokesperson for the group previously told Sky News: “We want to strike fear into anyone who drives a huge polluting SUV in a UK city.
"There comes a point where asking politely and protesting has stopped working, and it’s time for action, to sabotage the machines that are killing us.
"Some of our number are people who live near busy polluted roads, slowly choked by gas guzzlers. Others are cyclists who have been nearly killed by an SUV too many times. We are all united by the science that SUVs are a climate disaster."
Both Waltham Forest and Camden Councils have been approached for comment.
The Standard has also approached The Tyre Extinguishers.
