Wallasey Tunnel closed for second time today due to 'police incident'

Wallasey Tunnel is closed for the second time today due to a "police incident".

Police are currently at the scene at Kingsway Tunnel today, Sunday, November 27. The tunnel is closed on the Liverpool side to drivers and traffic is at a standstill.

Officers have also stopped traffic from St Anne Street in the city centre and a cordon is also in place there. The incident relates to concern for safety of a man.

Traffic management system Inrix said: "Kingsway Wallasey Tunnel out of town closed, slow traffic due to police incident from Liverpool to Wallasey."

Merseytravel also tweeted and said the north and south bound slip roads on Scotland Road are currently closed. Arriva buses 432 and 433 will be diverted through the Birkenhead/Queensway Tunnel.

This is a the second time the tunnel was closed in less than 12 hours after the "unexplained death" of a man near the tunnel. The man reportedly fell from the bridge on Wheatland Lane in Wallasey at around 5.05am today, and officers commenced CPR when they arrived. An ambulance took him to hospital where he was later pronounced dead.

He is yet to be formally identified, police said. Wallasey Tunnel was closed in both directions this morning following the incident and drivers were diverted to the Birkenhead Tunnel.

Enquiries into the incident are ongoing and emergency services remain in the area to establish the full circumstances of this incident. Wallasey Tunnel has now reopened to traffic.

A spokesperson for Merseyside Police said: "We can confirm that at around 2.30pm today, Sunday, November 27, we received a report of concern for the safety of a man at the Kingsway Tunnel in Liverpool.

"Kingsway Tunnel and the surrounding roads are currently closed while emergency services deal with the incident. We ask that the public avoid the area and find an alternative route. We thank you for your patience as we deal with this incident."
