The Wallasey Tunnel was closed by police after a dog was seen "strolling" around inside.
Mersey Tunnels Police and Merseyside Police were called to the Wallasey Tunnel on Tuesday, April 25 at around 12.15pm following reports of an animal spotted running in the carriageway. Staff were at the scene a short time later and blocked access to the tunnel on the Liverpool side.
Merseytravel confirmed a dog was running freely inside and was later caught by staff safe and well. Traffic was then released with little disruption.

One eyewitness, who asked not to be named, said: “The entrance to the Wallasey tunnel was blocked, (the Liverpool side) we saw the lights from the police car on the opposite side and weren't sure why. They were so slow until the dog came strolling out.
"The police drove along side it towards the Scotland Road direction. Traffic went back to normal straight away.”
A Merseytravel spokesperson said: "We can confirm that there was an incident earlier today where a dog was spotted running freely inside the Kingsway (Wallasey Tunnel). Our staff attended the scene and were able to safely stop traffic and bring the dog to safety.
"We thank all motorists for their patience during this time as traffic was disrupted during the incident. The tunnel traffic is now flowing freely."
A spokesperson from Merseyside Police said: "At around 12.15pm this afternoon (Tuesday 25 April) we received a report of a dog going into the Kingsway Tunnel in Liverpool. This has been referred to Tunnels police."
