Walking football is set to continue in Kirkcudbright during the winter.
The sessions began at St Cuthbert Wanderer’s St Mary’s Park earlier this year and have proved so popular players have voted to keep them going through the darker months.
There will be two sessions a week – one under floodlights from 6.45pm to 8pm on Mondays and one in daylight from 1.45pm to 3pm on Thursdays.
Organisers Craig Fabian said: “It’s going really well. We’re delighted. The players have voted unanimously to continue outdoor sessions right through the winter. The all-weather 3G pitch is perfect and we have floodlights for the evening sessions.”
Walking football is a slower version of the game for adults over 50. It’s a standard game on a smaller pitch with players walking instead of running. Player safety is top priority so there is no slide tackling or heading the ball.
Games are designed to help people get fit or to maintain an active lifestyle whatever their footballing ability, as well as get retired players back into the game. Older people who play regularly have enjoyed lower heart rate and reduced blood pressure, reduced fat, greater muscle strength and improved mobility.
