NEW YORK — The zombie apocalypse is headed for New York City.
“The Walking Dead” characters Maggie and Negan, played by Lauren Cohan and Jeffrey Dean Morgan, will get a spinoff show called “Isle of the Dead,” set to premiere next year, AMC announced Monday.
The six-episode first season will see Maggie and Negan “traveling into a post-apocalyptic Manhattan long ago cut off from the mainland,” the network said.
“The crumbling city is filled with the dead and denizens who have made New York City their own world full of anarchy, danger, beauty, and terror,” reads AMC’s description of the show.
Despite his brutal introduction in the season 6 finale of “The Walking Dead,” the bat-wielding Negan has found allies, if not friends, among the resilient survivors. But it remains to be seen how we’ll find Negan and Maggie together in the Big Apple spinoff after he bashed her husband, Glen, to death on “Walking Dead.”
“I’m delighted that Negan and Maggie’s journey continues,” Morgan said in a statement. “It’s been such a ride walking in Negan’s shoes, I’m beyond excited to continue his journey in New York City with Lauren.
“Walkers in an urban setting has always been such a cool image, but 5th Avenue, Empire State Building, Statue of Liberty? The greatest city in the world?? The backdrop is amazing, but it’s the story that (showrunner) Eli Jorne cooked up that is even better. Buckle up folks, ‘Isle of the Dead’ is going to reinvent the TWD Universe.”
“Walking Dead” chief content officer Scott Gimple described “Isle of the Dead” as “a chaotic, beautiful, grimy madhouse of the dead.”
“Isle of the Dead” is now the fifth spinoff from the original series, following “Fear the Walking Dead,” “World Beyond” and anthology series “Tales of the Walking Dead,” which is set to premiere this year. An untitled spinoff starring Norman Reedus and Melissa McBride was greenlit in September 2020.
Chris Hardwick also hosts the aftershow, “Talking Dead.”
The 11th and final season of “The Walking Dead,” which was split into three parts, is currently airing.
