Walking before emptying bowels or after it: Which is healthier and why

Walking is one of the simplest and most effective forms of exercise. It aids digestion, improves cardiovascular health, along with offering other health benefits. There has always been debate on whether morning hours are ideal for walking or the evening hours. However, there is one aspect that needs to be understood: whether it's better to walk before or after emptying their bowels. The timing can influence digestion, comfort, and even gut health.

What happens when you walk before emptying your bowel

If you struggle with constipation, walking before a bowel movement can help move stool through the intestines faster. Physical activity is known to reduce bloating and gas, making elimination smoother.

Many people feel stiff after waking up. Walking activates the muscles in the abdomen, intestines, and pelvic area, promoting gut motility. It increases blood flow to the digestive organs, making it easier to pass stool. This can be particularly beneficial for those who experience constipation, as walking helps trigger the natural urge to go.

Some people wake up and immediately feel the need to empty their bowels. In this case, it’s better to go first before walking.

Know the benefits of walking after using the washroom

If you have issues with bloating or acid reflux, walking after a bowel movement (and after eating) helps prevent discomfort.

After a bowel movement, the intestines feel lighter, making walking more comfortable. There's less pressure in the abdomen, reducing the risk of bloating or discomfort during movement. If you walk after eating and emptying your bowels, it helps food move through the digestive system more efficiently.

Studies have said post-meal walking helps digestion.

If your bowel movements are inconsistent, walking first might help establish a routine.

How to maintain a healthy walking and bowel routine

Drinking a glass of warm water in the morning helps soften stool and promote regular bowel movements.

Eat plenty of fiber from fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and legumes to support digestion.

Try to walk at the same time every day to create consistency in digestion and bowel movements.

If walking before a bowel movement makes you uncomfortable, opt for a short indoor walk first.

If walking after emptying your bowels feels better, ensure you wait at least 10–15 minutes after eating.
