Walgreens, AvKare and Four Other Eye Drop Brands Recalled Nationwide Over Sterility Concerns: Check Your Lot Numbers

Nine over-the-counter eye drop and ointment listings, including Walgreens-brand lubricant eye drops, have been recalled nationwide because the manufacturer cannot guarantee they are sterile. The recalls by Sterling Pharmaceutical Services LLC, an Illinois company, began Aug. 20. The Food and Drug Administration classified them as Class II in its enforcement report for the week of Sept. 25, The Healthy reported.

The affected products are the kind people keep in a medicine cabinet, car or desk drawer for dry, irritated eyes. They include store-brand and discount-brand artificial tears, a nighttime eye ointment, and a saline solution used for corneal swelling. Store-brand bottles are easy to overlook, so many households may be using one from a listed lot without knowing it.
