Wales Women break ticket sales record for crucial World Cup qualifier as interest explodes after England Euros triumph

Wales Women's ticket sales record has been broken more than a month before their next home match amid an explosion of interest in women's football.

The existing attendance record for a women's international football match in Wales currently stands at 5,455, but the Football Association of Wales says sales have now surpassed that figure ahead of Gemma Grainger's team facing Slovenia in a crucial World Cup qualifier at Cardiff City Stadium on Tuesday, September 6 (7.45pm kick-off). Wales Women are bidding to reach their first major tournament and are on course to secure a play-off spot, but the last match of their campaign could become a winner-takes-all affair.

The FAW is aiming to attract at least 10,000 fans to the qualifier, with the surge in ticket sales coming on the back of a record-breaking Women's Euro 2022 which has seen interest in women's football surge amid England's triumph.

Wales are hoping to reach the 2023 Women's World Cup in Australia and New Zealand and four points in their remaining two matches - away to Greece on Friday, September 2, and then at home to Slovenia - will guarantee a play-off spot by virtue of finishing second in the group, behind leaders France.

Wales captain and centurion Sophie Ingle said: "I’m so excited that the Red Wall are turning out in their numbers to support us, making history and more noise once again in this World Cup qualifying campaign. It means the world to us as players, we couldn’t do what we do without you.

"The women’s game has had huge exposure with the recent Euros, and we can’t wait to see the effect of that in the Cardiff City Stadium. Hopefully it will be a huge night for Welsh football as we look to reach the play-offs for the first time. We are more motivated than ever."

The existing attendance record was set against Estonia last October. The FAW said clubs and schools across the country have already engaged in the group booking scheme, offering discounted junior tickets from £2 and adult tickets from £6. The group booking scheme is open until Wednesday, August 24, and application forms can be found here.

Individual tickets are available to buy here, priced at £8 for adults and £4 for juniors.
