Wales star Liam Williams to quit Welsh rugby

Wales full-back Liam Williams is set to leave Cardiff in a move to Japan.

WalesOnline first revealed interest from the Far East in Williams' services back in February and the BBC now report the 32-year-old will depart from the Arms Park with two years left on his contract.

Severe financial constraints have seen the regions having to cut their cloths, with Cardiff facing a £2million cut to their budget.

Williams is one of the high earners in the Welsh capital and made just four appearances in his first season with the club due to injury. For the latest Welsh rugby news sent straight to your inbox, sign up here.

It is not known which Japanese club he is joining, but WalesOnline reported back in February that Kubota Spears were considering putting together a deal worth £500,000 a season to land the Lions star.

Williams has 84 caps to his name so will still be eligible to play for Wales and is available for World Cup selection should he be picked by Warren Gatland this summer.

He has become the latest Welsh player to leave the game here in Wales, with Joe Hawkins (Exeter), Cory Hill (Japan), Rhys Webb (Biarritz), Tom Francis (Provence), Ross Moriarty (Brive), Will Rowlands (Racing 92) and Dillon Lewis (Harlequins) all moving abroad next season.

Players such as Gareth Anscombe, Leigh Halfpenny and Rhys Patchell remain without clubs and their futures in limbo.

Williams is the 17th player to leave Cardiff this summer.
