Wales set for warmest day of year with 20°C temperatures

Wales is set for its warmest day of year with temperatures finally rising as we approach the end of April. Welsh weather presenter Derek Brockway shared a weather map showing it could reach 20°C in one part of Wales by 5pm on Saturday (April 29).

It is good news for the first bank holiday weekend in May with the Met Office saying that, across the three days, many will see some "dry, bright and rather warm conditions" after a month of cold and wet weather.

There are some "slow-moving heavy showers" in the forecast but on the whole it is going to feel warmer as winds from Europe help see the temperatures rise. You can get more local news and other story updates straight to your inbox by subscribing to our newsletters here.

Derek Brockway said: "Temperatures in some places could potentially reach 19°C or 20°C on Saturday afternoon. 20°C 68F in Monmouth. Making it the warmest day of the year so far in Wales!."

Met Office chief meteorologist Matthew Lehnert said: “After many areas saw below average temperatures earlier in the week, temperatures are now rising across much of the UK as warmer air is drawn northeast from the North Atlantic."

But he warned: "This has brought a lot of moisture too which will help trigger showers as well as allow some low cloud to affect some coasts. With light winds, showers that do develop will be slow-moving and lead to some heavy downpours, accompanied by hail and thunder at times.”

The focus for the showers, some of which are likely to be slow-moving, is expected to change over the course of the weekend.

On Saturday, the heaviest showers are likely to be focused across Northern Ireland, northeast Wales and central England. On Sunday, showers are expected to affect a larger part of the UK, although central and southeast England are expected to remain mainly dry.

By Monday, drier conditions are expected to develop across the west, whilst showers become concentrated across eastern areas.

The Met Office forecast for Wales on Saturday says: "Low cloud and mist burning back to coasts, with skies brightening up. Showers developing during the morning, these becoming heavy and slow-moving in places with a risk of thunderstorms in the north and east.

"Feeling pleasantly warm in any sunshine. Maximum temperature 19 °C. A few heavy showers continuing this evening, these drifting into eastern areas. Patchy low cloud and mist developing overnight with further showers possible, mainly in the west. Minimum temperature 8 °C."

The outlook for Sunday to Wednesday says: "Showery rain in the west on Sunday developing more widely with slow-moving and heavy downpours becoming increasingly likely. Thunderstorms are possible in a few places but feeling fairly warm in any brightness. Maximum temperature 16 °C.

"Drier on Monday albeit with isolated showers still possible. Becoming settled and mainly dry on Tuesday and Wednesday. Rather warm by day but some cool nights with possible fog patches."
