Wales heatwave: Top doctor issues warning ahead of extreme temperatures set to cause 'significant impact'

One of Wales' top doctors claims the extreme heat warning issued for Wales by the Met Office is likely to have a significant impact on society. Deputy Chief Medical Officer for Wales Chris Jones is urging people to take extra precautions and plan ahead to keep themselves and others safe.

The Met Office Amber warning, issued for Sunday, July 17, Monday, July 18, and Tuesday, July 19, suggests some parts of east Wales could see temperatures reach early to mid-30s. The Welsh Government said it is working with the emergency services, local authorities, schools and businesses to keep the public safe during the warning period.

Dr Jones said: "Extreme heat warnings are not issued lightly by the Met Office and the potential health risks need to be taken seriously. Very high temperatures can be dangerous for everyone but elderly people, children, those with chronic health problems and vulnerable people who may struggle to keep cool are at a higher risk."
