Wales create history as first ever World Cup press conference held in Welsh

Ben Davies made World Cup history by conducting a first ever press conference at the tournament in Welsh.

Rob Page's side are preparing for what will be only their second ever appearance at the global showpiece, and several players have spoken to the media ahead of their opening fixture against the United States of America on Monday.

On Saturday afternoon, Tottenham ace Davies answered questions from journalists in the Welsh language, the first ever time this has been done at the tournament.

When asked about using his mother tongue in the media briefing, Davies said: "It’s a fantastic feeling to be a part of this squad and have the chance to travel around the world and show the best of Wales. It’s a really special feeling.

“We’re trying to show the best of Wales and everyone will wear the shirt with pride.”

Such has been the impression Wales have had on the global stage in recent years, Brazil legend Cafu went viral on social media this week after throwing his support behind Page's troops.

Kitted out with a Wales bucket hat, the two-time World Cup winner read out a message in Welsh to welcome the nation back to the top table of football.

"Cymru, croeso nôl," he said. "You last played in the World Cup 64 years ago. Your return has been an inspiration to everyone, including me.

"Good luck boyos. Iechyd da!"

Davies could not hide his delight at seeing Cafu's touching gesture, and he stated it was further proof that the Welsh national team are having a positive impact on the global stage.

"I saw the video and it's class," admitted Davies. "It's strange to see someone like Cafu wearing a bucket hat and trying to speak a bit of Welsh but it's great, and it shows we’re doing all the right things on and off the pitch."

Discussing the video, Davies' team-mate Jonny Williams said: “We were completely surprised, we had a bit of a joke about it at dinner. Wishing us well, with his bucket hat on. I got tagged in to an Instagram post from Budweiser too. Everyone couldn’t believe what they were seeing.”
