I tried the viral Waitrose pistachio Easter egg – but is it worth £17?

If you’re looking forward to the next bank holiday, the countdown to Easter Sunday (5 April) is officially on. The four-day weekend is a favourite for many, thanks to the spring weather, tasty treats, and, of course, the best Easter eggs.

While some stick with the classics (hands up Cadbury Creme Egg lovers), others have embraced more experimental flavours and surprising textures, like pistachio Easter eggs.

One of the highlights was Waitrose bringing back its viral pistachio egg. Riding the wave of the internet’s ongoing love for Dubai chocolate, it feels set for cult status once again. Shaped like a pistachio nut, the egg is made from Fairtrade cocoa and creamy white chocolate, packed with real pistachio nibs. For 2026, Waitrose has increased the pistachio content, giving it an even crunchier, nuttier finish.

Waitrose’s the cracking pistachio Easter egg has a luxe design that is made to turn heads, with a glossy white chocolate and caramelised sugar shell encasing a pistachio-green inner “nut” that nods to the real thing. It feels playful but refined – the sort of fun Easter egg that’s totally gift worthy.

Crack into the outer layer and you’re met with blonde chocolate that’s creamy and gently biscuity, rather than cloying. The caramelised sugar, swirled through the white chocolate, brings a distinct butterscotch warmth that lingers on the tongue, adding depth to what could otherwise be a very sweet shell. A subtle hit of salt runs through it too, cutting through the richness and keeping each bite balanced.

This year’s iteration of the cracking pistachio Easter egg certainly doesn’t scrimp on the filling. The pistachio centre is generously studded with real nut pieces, giving it a satisfying crunch. The pistachio paste itself delivers a softly sweet, rounded nuttiness – not overpowering, but present enough to make the flavour the clear hero.

There’s no doubt that the aesthetic offers an unusual element to Easter egg hunts and Easter Sunday dinner tables. Plus, it’s made using Fairtrade cocoa and presented in recyclable packaging.

While the £17 price point is a premium cost for an Easter egg, I think this could be a posh chocolate treat if you’re looking to splurge or spoil someone this year.
