Waitrose is bringing back its free coffee offer in the hope it will help boost falling sales caused by the country's cost-of-living crisis.
Shoppers with a myWaitrose loyalty card can pick up a free tea or coffee from today - two years after the supermarket ditched the perk during the pandemic.
There is no minimum spend required, but customers must bring their own reusuable cups to help the store cut down on unnecessary waste.
The news comes as supermarkets - especially more expensive ones such as Waitrose - deal with falling sales.
As food and energy costs soar, many shoppers are turning to discount stores like Aldi and Lidl.
John Lewis Partnership reported in September that Waitrose saw a £90million (5%) fall in profits in the six months to June. Though profits still came to £432 million.
The free tea and coffee offer was introduced to cardholders in 2013. Originally shoppers didn't need to buy anything to claim their hot drink, but in 2017 Waitrose changed its policy, requiring card holders to purchase something to be eligible for the freebie.
It later started asking customers to bring reusable cups.
Without a myWaitrose card a cup of tea at the store costs from from £2.25 and coffee from £2.35.
Waitrose will now be offering higher quality coffee beans having teamed up with cafe chain Caffe Nero.
Customers will be able to choose from an Americano, latte and cappuccino.
Charlotte Di Cello, commercial director for Waitrose said: "Our customers loved the myWaitrose free coffee offer, so we are really excited to bring it back, with premium beans from The Nero Roasting Company.
"The partnership is an ideal fit, helping customers enjoy quality coffee both in-store or at home - with even more benefits in the pipeline."
The offer will be available across Waitrose's 331 UK shops, although not in service stations and garages, from November 7.
Will Stratton-Morris, chief executive of Caffè Nero UK, which has 650 stores, said it "feels like a natural collaboration, with customers of each company getting mutual discounts and benefits."
