Waitrose announces loyalty scheme revamp - and it means more savings for shoppers

Waitrose is revamping its loyalty programme this month - and the supermarket says loyal shoppers will be able to save 112% more.

The MyWaitrose scheme will relaunch on February 23 and will offer customers more “personalised offers” that should be based on their shopping habits.

Waitrose, which is part of the John Lewis Partnership, said loyalty members would get “more flexibility, tailored offers and money off their weekly shop” with rewards split into two categories.

There will be both personalised offers and exclusive savings, with vouchers being issued on a weekly basis.

The discounts can be redeemed via the MyWaitrose membership hub online, via the Waitrose app or in stores.

Some offers will be monthly, and customers will be emailed each Wednesday to remind them to select their deals for the week.

One of the first discounts already announced by Waitrose is 20% off cheese, meat, fish and deli counters from February 23 until March 14.

The Grocer reports that Waitrose has spent “tens of millions into the scheme” to double its investment in MyWaitrose offers.

“Encouraging MyWaitrose members to sample more of these products will provide a much-needed boost to these smaller suppliers and will also allow customers to experience the unrivalled service offered by our meat, fish and cheese specialists,” the retailer said.

The shake-up of its loyalty scheme comes after Waitrose stopped giving out free newspapers to its MyWaitrose members.

Loyal shoppers will be able to still get free copies of Waitrose Food, Health and Drinks magazines, discounts on dry cleaning and Cookery School courses and cashback on healthy products with Vitality Health.

Waitrose stopped giving away free hot drinks for members during the Covid pandemic.

There are 332 shops across the Waitrose & Partners brand in the United Kingdom, including 65 "little Waitrose" convenience shops.

For example, Tesco has its Clubcard scheme which lets you collect points every time you shop.

Shoppers get one point for every £1 they spend in store and online, or one point for every £2 spent on fuel.

You need a minimum of 150 points to get any sort of voucher, which will be worth £1.50 - or save them up, and 500 points would be worth £5, for example.

Or if you shop in Sainsbury's, you'll probably be familiar with the Nectar loyalty scheme.

To get one Nectar point you need to spend £1 at Sainsbury’s, or one Nectar point for every litre of fuel purchased in Sainsbury’s petrol stations.

One Nectar point is then worth 0.5p to spend, which means 100 points would convert into 50p.

For a £40 shop, you’d need to have saved up 8,000 points to convert into money to use.
