Waitress slammed for 'ruining' pregnancy announcement with order error - but she hits back

Being teetotal has risen in popularity in recent years, and there are a wealth of alcohol-free options you can drink when out with your friends and family. Thanks to the rise in clever booze-free cocktails, spirits and beers, it's far more normalised for patrons to opt for an alcohol-free drink these days. One waitress who didn't think much of a woman's virgin cocktail order was left reeling, however, as she accidentally 'ruined' the customer's pregnancy announcement.

Brooke Steinschifter, who posts on TikTok as @brooke.steins, explained the horrible predicament she found herself in - but she didn't hold back when defending herself. She argues that the situation wasn't her fault, as she just made a simple mistake.

She was serving a large table of '15 or 17 people' who she described as 'really nice, really great', and she noticed there were 'a couple of ladies that weren't drinking' but she said it was 'no big deal'.

The women said they didn't want anyone to know they weren't drinking, and asked Brooke to 'keep it on the DL' (down low) so she agreed. The waitress explained the women were 'wink winking' at her and she wondered whether they were insinuating something so she 'naturally assumed they were pregnant or one of them was pregnant'.

She said she was serving their virgin drinks throughout the night but the wider group were ordering lots of drinks and splitting bottles of wine - so things got a bit complicated when they split the bill.

Brooke explained: "When I was splitting the bill I slipped up and I accidentally put a virgin drink on a bill that wasn't meant for the person that I gave it to. So I actually gave someone a bill that had a virgin mojito on it and she got a mojito, so that's where it didn't register in my brain."

She explained she'd put the drink on the wrong bill, as the woman said that she didn't order a virgin drink. Brooke said: "No problem, I must've punched it in wrong", and didn't make a big deal out of the situation.

When she walked away though, someone at the table was asking who was drinking virgin drinks, and Brooke described them as 'nosy'.

The waitress explained that her manager then came over to her and said women from the table had approached her 'fuming' because of her slip-up. Her manager said that the women had claimed she 'ruined' the woman's pregnancy announcement and they were 'so upset'.

The woman from the table then called Brooke 'unprofessional' and said her friend was 'absolutely so upset' because of what happened with the virgin mojito.

The woman said: "Now everyone on the entire table knows she's pregnant because you gave somebody the wrong bill and it's just super unprofessional."

Brooke said that she was 'so upset' and she 'needed to know' what people thought.

People were quick to defend Brooke, saying that she'd not done anything wrong and they'd overreacted.

One said: "Deffs not your fault. They go out drinking with their friends is their own risk of getting caught."

Another fumed: "I would have congratulated her on her pregnancy in front of the whole table after that."

"People constantly need something to complain about. They’re tired and stressed in their own lives and need to take it out on someone. I’m sorry", someone added.

A former waitress wrote: "Former waitress here, you are absolutely not in the wrong. It's not easy to keep up with all of the drinks for big tables and it's easy to mix them up."
