CHICAGO _ Their pitching plan upended a few hours before the start of Saturday's doubleheader, the Cardinals got a steady start from Adam Wainwright and an early flex of power to sweep a doubleheader at Wrigley Field.
Wainwright guided the Cardinals to a 4-2 victory in Game 1 and left the bullpen only two outs to cover. That allowed the Cardinals to piece together a puzzle of relievers for Game 2. Andrew Miller, back off the injured list, closed the game for a 5-1 victory Saturday.
The Cardinals were the home team in the second game, meaning that victory was the first ever home win for the Cardinals at Wrigley.
A dash of homers gave them the early lead to hold.
Paul DeJong, who had three RBIs on the day, hit a home run for the Cardinals' first lead in Game 2. Lane Thomas followed with a walk, and Tyler O'Neill, back in the lineup, mashed a two-run homer. That swift 3-0 lead backed lefty Austin Gomber, who started the game in place of Dakota Hudson and offered the Cardinals 2 2/3 scoreless innings.
The Cardinals added on to their lead with Brad Miller's RBI single in the third inning, and O'Neill doubled and scored in the fourth.
Andrew Miller retired all three batters he faced for the save.
