WA to ease COVID rules for schools

Parents will be allowed back and events will return to WA schools when virus rules ease. (AAP)

Western Australia will ease some COVID-19 restrictions in schools, with parents allowed back and events to return.

The state reported its highest daily number of virus infections on Tuesday, posting 8910 new COVID-19 cases.

Six deaths were recorded, including one person aged in their 80s who died with the virus on Monday and five historic deaths.

There are 219 people in hospital with COVID-19, including six in ICU.

Education Minister Sue Ellery has announced new rules applying to parents, students and staff from term two, which begins on April 26.

She said changes were needed, given 90,000 students have had to isolate this term due to testing positive or becoming close contacts.

"Student attendance is down and managing COVID is taking its toll, people are tired," Ms Ellery told reporters in Perth.

"I'm pleased that we can give school staff and families a picture of what term two is expected to look like after they return from school holidays."

Parents will be allowed back onto school grounds to attend school assemblies, volunteer, participate in outside school pick-up and drop-off and visit residential facilities like boarding houses.

However, they must be fully vaccinated, wear masks and physically distance.

School balls and sporting events will resume but masks and social distancing rules apply, while performances including musicals and bands can return with spectators up to 75 per cent capacity.

School camps remain postponed, but Ms Ellery said this would be looked at again in the first week of term two.

Mask wearing will continue to be required in all schools for students in year 3 and above, however some contact tracing rules will ease.

Schools will only have to identify close contacts from within the school and the amount of information schools must report upon confirmation of a positive case will be reduced.

The WA government will distribute another one million rapid antigen tests to school staff and 2000 air purifiers for the start of term two.
