Race leader Enric Mas (Movistar) strengthened his hold on the red jersey on stage 12 of the Vuelta a España, going on the attack on the Calar Alto to gain nearly 30 seconds on his closest GC rival Primož Roglič (Red Bull-Bora-Hansgrohe).
Attacking early on the long final climb, Mas linked up with his teammate who had been in the break to build a solid gap over Roglič, Felix Gall (Decathlon CMA CGM) and their teammates who, despite their best efforts, could not take much time back from the Spaniard.
