Morning, everyone. Some measure of how Australians feel about another Donald Trump presidency is offered today by our latest Guardian Essential poll which shows voters are worried about the impact he will have on security and the world economy. It comes as he has suggested he will use the military to enforce the deportation of illegal immigrants.

In other news, Russia reacted angrily to Kyiv getting the green light for long-range missile strikes, Anthony Albanese met Xi Jinping, and Sam Kerr and her partner are having a baby.

Australia

  • Exclusive | Tim Winton and Charlotte Wood are among a group of more than 90 writers and literary supporters who have paid for every federal parliamentarian to receive a carefully curated package of books on the Middle East to expand their knowledge of the history of the conflict.

  • Guardian Essential poll | Almost half of voters want the Australian government to review Aukus and the acquisition of nuclear submarines after Donald Trump’s election win, with most believing he will be bad for the global economy and conflict resolution.

  • Social reset | A parliamentary committee examining the impact of social media has recommended users be given the power to alter, reset or turn off algorithms but has stopped short of recommending a ban for under-16s.

  • Cost-of-living hit | Young Australians aged 18 to 29 have cut back the most due to financial pressures while older people are shopping more, data compiled by Australia’s biggest bank shows.

  • Diplomatic drudgery | Domestic workers employed in the households of overseas diplomats in Canberra are being exploited by oppressive working conditions which in some cases sees them working for as little as 65c an hour, lawyers and activists say.

World

  • Russian warning | The Kremlin has said Joe Biden’s outgoing administration wants to escalate the conflict in Ukraine by allowing Kyiv to use long-range missiles for strikes inside Russia.

  • Assassination plot | Canadian authorities have foiled an alleged Iranian plot to assassinate a former justice minister and rights activist who has been a strong critic of Tehran, the Globe and Mail newspaper has reported.

  • Trump threat | Donald Trump has backed up a social media post extolling the use of military force to deport illegal migrants, and concerns are rising about how his choice of Matt Gaetz as attorney general means he might abuse his powers to target political foes for “retribution”. The Morning Joe hosts Mika Brzezinski and Joe Scarborough have revealed that they met Trump about “a new approach” after their public opposition to the incoming president, while Fox News is riding high after it championed Trump’s cause.

  • Climate miss | The goal to keep the world’s temperature rise below 1.5C is now “deader than a doornail”, with this year almost certain to be the first above the threshold, climate scientists have concluded even as world leaders gather to discuss the matter.

  • Rio talks | The president of Brazil, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, has opened the G20 meeting in Rio de Janeiro with the launch of an alliance to combat hunger, which he described as the “ultimate symbol of our collective tragedy”. The UK prime minister, Keir Starmer, raised human rights issues with Xi Jinping, while Anthony Albanese talked trade with the Chinese president.

  • Resolute test | An Australian gold mining company has agreed to give $247m to the government of Mali after its chief executive and two other employees were detained by authorities in the West African country.

Trump’s new cabinet: ‘authoritarianism and chaos’

The Guardian’s Washington DC bureau chief, David Smith, speaks to Nour Haydar about what Donald Trump’s cabinet picks tell us about his plans for his second term as president.

In-depth

Almost half of Australians (49%) believe immigration is too high but the large majority (71%) still think that migrants make the country stronger and that multiculturalism has benefited the nation (85%). These are perhaps contradictory findings from the Scanlon Foundation Research Institute’s annual survey, Mapping Social Cohesion, out today. One of the lead authors said that despite the stresses caused by the Middle East crisis, the findings “speak to the resilience” of Australian society. Karen Middleton looks into the details.

Not the news

Australian houses are now, on average, the biggest in the world having gone in six decades from 100 sq metres to 236 sq metres. In an architectural artwork-cum-provocation called Home Truth, a Melbourne studio has built a labyrinthine, oppressive 236 sq m house in the back of the National Gallery of Victoria next to a smaller one. Sian Cain speaks to the designers and finds out why there has never been a time “so ripe for innovation in housing”.

Sport

  • Football | The Matildas captain, Sam Kerr, and her partner, the USA and West Ham footballer Kristie Mewis, have announced they are having a baby due next year.

  • Cricket | A hamstring injury to Glenn Maxwell was the only dampener as Marcus Stoinis helped Australia thrash Pakistan by seven wickets to seal a clean sweep in their three-game Twenty20 series.

  • Football | The Socceroos can still qualify for the World Cup directly but the lifelines are running out with a difficult away tie in Bahrain coming up.

Media roundup

Two Melbourne teenagers are in a critical condition in Laos after suspected methanol poisoning, according to the Age. The South Australia Liberals’ disastrous defeat in the Black byelection at the weekend exposes deep problems they can’t blame on the premier, Peter Malinauskas, the Advertiser opines.

What’s happening today

  • Economy | The minutes of the RBA monetary policy meeting are due at 11.30am.

  • Brisbane | An International Space Symposium will discuss AI, robotics and automation.

  • Media | The Walkley award winners will be announced tonight.
