Voters give a thumbs down to polarization bids

CHENNAI: The BJP’s attempts to polarise votes on communal lines hasn’t paid off everywhere. In ward 8 of Melur municipality in Madurai district, where a BJP booth agent objected to women voters wearing the hijab, the party’s candidate got only 10 votes. The DMK nominee won easily.

In Thirukattupalli town panchayat, the BJP organized big protests alleging that Class XII student Lavanya committed suicide because her school authorities pressured her to convert to christianity. The DMK won 11 out of the 15 wards. The BJP won none.
