While the cost of buying and running an electric car is coming down, the government has set its sights on a proposed pence-per-mile tax to help offset the loss of fuel duty caused by the switch to EVs and fewer miles being driven by petrol and diesel car owners.
The plan is to introduce a 3p-per-mile tax, dubbed eVED (electric Vehicle Excise Duty), which was floated by chancellor Rachel Reeves in last year’s budget. It sparked huge debate among Independent readers.
