Vladimir Putin’s army is suffering “Somme” level casualties as he has stepped up his offensive in eastern Ukraine, say western officials.

More than 700,000 Russian soldiers have been killed or wounded since Putin launched his invasion in February 2022, according to reports, with very high casualties also among Ukrainian troops.
