Russian President Vladimir Putin has claimed "sanitary reasons" prompted his refusal to stand within 70ft of Britain's ambassador to Moscow at a ceremony in the Kremlin.

Putin called for "a change for the better" in relations between Moscow and London at the event on Monday at the Alexander Hall of the Grand Kremlin Palace.
