Vital Edinburgh centre in danger of closing unless £80,000 found by July

An Edinburgh MP has pleaded with those elected to the council next week to meet with the representatives of a vital community centre that is facing imminent closure.

Christine Jardine, a Liberal Democrat MP for Edinburgh West, has said that Drylaw Neighbourhood Centre is facing closure due to a funding crisis.

Her call for help was made after she visited the hub that helps to service over 300 people each week.

At the moment the centre has to find £80,000 to meet overhead costs by July if it is to continue to deliver vital services to the North Edinburgh community.

Jardine MP said "This is a vital asset for the community and since 1995, has been providing essential support for all age ranges in the Drylaw area.

“It is somewhere all ages can get together either in organised groups or just for a chat. That is especially important for those who are living on their own such as elderly residents. Losing this facility would have a huge impact on the well-being of the community."

Despite applying for various funding such as the Postcode Lottery and the Council, they have found themselves with just three months until the deadline and without any funding reprieve for the overhead running of the centre in sight.

Christine says that she has been a supporter of the centre, and met members of the board to discuss the situation to see how she could help the situation and as a result has suggested a meeting with the new council immediately after the elections.

She continued: "We need to help to keep the centre open. This is the reason why I am looking to facilitate a meeting with the centre's administration and the newly appointed Council and the councillors of the area after the local elections.

“The deadline of July is close and we need to find a sustainable solution rapidly."
