Visitors 'saddened' by shopping centre's 'depressing' Christmas lights

As Christmas draws near towns across Merseyside have decked their high street with festive lights.

However, in Birkenhead shoppers have remarked on how "sad" and "depressing" the Pyramid Shopping Centre has been during the Christmas period. Photos taken by the ECHO show the town's shopping centre has very few decorations up with one person commenting "a few lights would help to lift people's spirits."

In a post to a local community group on Facebook, residents of the town shared their thoughts on the "sad decline" of the centre's Christmas lights which used to be "fabulous". The shopping centre, which is run by Pyramids, has set up a Christmas grotto which they say more than 600 children have visited this year alone.

One person said: "All the lovely Christmas light displays in places such as Bebington, Heswall, and Hoylake have been provided by enthusiastic, committed groups of volunteers. They have been paid for by donations from people in the community."

Another person commented: "Birkenhead used to have fab Christmas lights and a Christmas light switch on. Pyramids had fabulous lights and Santa's grotto. Late night Thursday shopping, sad times to see."

However, one person said: "So sad and depressing to see Birkenhead going into decline. It used to be such a busy place throughout the year, especially at Christmas. Funds are low for everyone but, not even a tree. A few lights would help to lift people's spirits."

A spokesperson for Pyramids said: "We have lights at most of the entrances and exits, a Christmas tree in the internal mall as well as fun baubles for children to climb in and take photos. The trees in St John’s Square are also lit up and over 600 children have visited our grotto, in partnership with a local charity to see Father Christmas."
