Offering spectacular views that can stretch as far as 30 miles, Beeston Castle is an ideal location for a family day out.
Located less than an hour's drive from Liverpool in Tarporley, Cheshire, the impressive medieval castle is perched on a rocky sandstone crag 350 feet above the Cheshire plain. Beeston Castle boasts a rich 4,000 year history, along with a 40-acre woodland park.
Beeston Castle, which is owned and managed by English Heritage, has become a hotspot for history enthusiasts and families alike, reports Cheshire Live. The castle was built in the early 1220s by Ranulf, sixth earl of Chester, when he returned from the Crusades.

After passing into the Crown's ownership, the castle suffered centuries of neglect before being refortified in the 17th century. It was besieged for many months during the Civil War in 1644 and 1645 and was then partially demolished.
Today, the castle attracts thousands of visitors each year. As well as the remnants of the structure itself, it is also surrounded by scenic woodland. Additionally, there is a small café at the base of the castle, as well as a shop inside the 19th century ticket office.
It costs £10 for adults to visit the site, which includes a donation, and £6 for children. Families for two adults and up to three children can get a ticket for £26 whilst families with one adult costs £16.
In terms of parking at the castle, there is a car park with around 100 spaces, costing £3 for non-members to park. Members can park their car for free. The car park is located directly across from the ticket office building on Chapel Lane, just west of the A49.
As soon as visitors purchase their tickets, they will then begin a steep climb up the hill, making their way through a wooded area and up to the ruins of the 13th century outer gatehouse. The main feature of the site is the inner gatehouse, which was likely the first part of the structure to be built in the 1220s.
In addition to taking in the extensive history of the castle, guests can also enjoy stunning views that can stretch as far as 30 miles on a clear day. English Heritage describes the view as "one of the most dramatic in Cheshire." Visitors may be able to spot the Welsh Hills, Liverpool, Chester, Stanlow Oil Refinery and Jodrell Bank, with Peckforton Castle spotted nestled on the opposite hillside.
Visitors will be able to find the gift shop inside the ticket office building. Those looking to refuel after a busy day of exploring can head to the Sandstone Café, which is located just down the road from the entrance to the castle grounds.
The café serves light bites such as pasties, sausage rolls, soup and a children's lunch box, along with a variety of cakes. Hot and cold drinks are available. Beeston Castle is open to visitors from 10am until 5pm every day. To find out more, visit the English Heritage website.
