Virginia Governor Glenn Youngkin has declared a state of emergency in anticipation of Hurricane Helene, making Virginia the fifth state to do so. The state is bracing for heavy rainfall and potential flooding in its western regions on Friday and Saturday.
Governor Youngkin emphasized the need for preparedness, stating, 'Even though the largest impacts of Helene are expected to be to the south and west of us, we must remain vigilant as past events have shown that tropical systems can bring significant rainfall leading to flooding in our region.'
Residents are urged to stay informed and heed the guidance of local authorities as the storm approaches. The state of emergency declaration enables the mobilization of resources and equipment necessary for response and recovery efforts.
In addition to Virginia, the governors of Florida, Georgia, South Carolina, and North Carolina have also declared states of emergency in response to Hurricane Helene.
