Virginia AG Jason Miyares Celebrates Supreme Court's Voter Roll Decision

Supreme Court The first day of the court's new term in Washington

Virginia Attorney General Jason Miyares praised the Supreme Court's decision to halt a lower court's ruling reinstating potential noncitizens to the state's voter rolls as a significant victory for the rule of law. Miyares emphasized the importance of upholding Virginia's laws to prevent noncitizens from being included in the upcoming elections, avoiding the re-inclusion of over 1,500 noncitizens on the voter rolls.

Expressing gratitude for the swift action taken by the Supreme Court, Miyares highlighted the decision as a reaffirmation of the state's dedication to election integrity and ensuring a secure electoral process for all Virginians. He commended the Virginia Attorney General's office team for their diligent efforts in defending state law and upholding the rule of law throughout the legal process.

The Supreme Court's divided decision granted Virginia's stay application pending appeal in the Fourth Circuit Court of Appeals, with Justices Sotomayor, Kagan, and Jackson in dissent. The ruling marks a victory for Governor Glenn Youngkin, following the state's emergency appeal to the high court to prevent the restoration of approximately 1,600 individuals' names to the voter rolls.
