Virgil van Dijk sends blunt message on Liverpool transfers as Luka Modric claim emerges

Your Liverpool morning digest for Friday, March 17.

Virgil van Dijk calls on Liverpool to 'do their job' in summer

Virgil van Dijk admits the pressure is on Liverpool's recruitment department ahead of a huge transfer window this summer.

The £75m Dutch defender was one of a handful of big-money additions to the Reds squad in 2018 - alongside Fabinho (£40m), Alisson Becker (£65m) and Naby Keita (£52m) - that helped take Jurgen Klopp's team from a side battling for a place in the Premier League's top four to one that won every top-level trophy available to them between 2019 and 2022.

Van Dijk, who remains the Reds' club-record signing nearly five-and-a-half years on from his switch from Southampton, feels the club are approaching a critical period as Klopp and the backroom staff look to accelerate a rebuilding process at Anfield.

Midfielders are the priority at Anfield this summer with interest held in both Borussia Dortmund star Jude Bellingham and Wolves' Portugal international Matheus Nunes. Links to a whole host of other players continue daily and Van Dijk accepts it is a vital window for those tasked with bringing in the right players.

Liverpool sent surprising Luka Modric transfer message

Harry Redknapp has urged Liverpool to consider making a summer swoop for Real Madrid star Luka Modric.

The midfielder has won five Champions League trophies and three Spanish league titles since joining Real from Tottenham 11 years ago. However, the 37-year-old, who is out of contract this summer, has not yet held talks over extending his stay at the Santiago Bernabeu.

Karim Benzema scored in the 78th minute with Vinicius Junior providing the assist as holders Real overcame last year's beaten finalists Liverpool 6-2 on aggregate to qualify for the quarter-fianls of the Champions League on Wednesday night.
