Virgil van Dijk hit with extended ban as Liverpool captain accepts FA charge

Virgil van Dijk has been banned for a further match and fined £100,000 for using abusive and insulting words towards match officials following his sending off during Liverpool’s win over Newcastle last month.

The defender was shown a straight red card in the first-half after a challenge on Newcastle forward Alexander Isak and was seen visibly remonstrating with both referee John Brookes and fourth official Craig Pawson.

Van Dijk took minutes to leave the field of play and duly missed Liverpool’s win over Aston Villa last weekend.

After admitting that he acted in an improper manner, the Reds skipper will now miss the trip to Wolves on Saturday 16 September.

"The defender admitted that he acted in an improper manner and used abusive and insulting words towards a match official after being sent off in the 29th minute, and the sanctions were subsequently imposed by an independent regulatory commission," read an FA statement.
