Game4Padel are building three padel courts at Liverpool Cricket Club following investment from Virgil van Dijk and Sir Andy Murray.
Padel is a racket sport that combines elements of tennis, squash, and badminton, and is reportedly the world’s fastest growing sport.
About the sport and new courts, Van Dijk said: “I first played padel in the Netherlands, and really enjoyed it. It’s fast-paced, fun and a good way to relax off the football pitch. We have padel courts at the Liverpool training ground, and I’m really pleased there are more facilities coming to the city for everyone to enjoy”.
Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp and former footballer David Beckham are also fans of the game.
The new courts at Liverpool Cricket Club on Aigburth Road adds to the existing facilities such as squash and tennis courts, a bowling green, as well as rugby and lacrosse pitches.
Mike Harrison, Chair of the Tennis Section at Liverpool Cricket Club has said padel is going to be a great addition to the club.
He said: “We have seen how popular the game is becoming all around the UK and we believe the courts will be really busy here where we have a lot of family members. The benefits of padel are that it’s really sociable, great fun and easy to pick up - you don’t need any previous racket experience - so we encourage as many people as possible to come and try it out.”
Game4Padel is the UK’s leading provider of padel courts and has a wide portfolio of celebrity investors.
They have the most venues across the UK as well as venues in Australia and Spain.
Company co-founder and CEO Michael Gradon has said: “At Game4Padel we are leading the way in terms of installing courts, offering funding to venues and managing facilities to ensure courts are well used.
“In the past year, there has been unprecedented demand for new padel courts around the country - many sports clubs are considering adding it to their sites because it does not require much space, and adds appeal for those who might not have considered joining before.”
Padel has been described as ‘the fitness trend of the summer’ and originated in Mexico. It then swept through South America and into Europe.
Spain has over 20,000 padel courts and has six million active players. Only football has more active players in the country.
