Virgil van Dijk aims sly 'best' dig at Arsenal after Liverpool clash as Gunners earn huge win

Arsenal returned to the top of the Premier League on Sunday as they earned a huge 3-2 win over Liverpool at the Emirates Stadium. A Bukayo Saka brace and Gabriel Martinelli goal cancelled out strikes from Darwin Nunez and Roberto Firmino to ensure the home side took all three points.

It represented a huge win in terms of the table, but also when it comes to the calibre of opposition, even despite their struggles so far this season. "Feels great," Mikel Arteta said on the win after the game to Sky Sports. "Especially the way we won the game, the atmosphere, I think we deserved to win the game.

"There was a lot of moments, the threat they have at any moment they can open you up and explore the spaces. I thought they were efficient with the chances they had but I think we showed a lot of composure and character in difficult moments."

It continues their ideal start to the season, only increasing the talk of a potential title challenge for the Gunners as they continue to win huge games. The opposite can be said of Liverpool, who currently sit in 10th with just two wins from their opening eight games of the season.

Following the game, defender Virgil van Dijk was tasked with media duties on Sky Sports and aimed a sly dig at Arsenal, claiming: "Very disappointed, obviously it was a very tough game for both sides. We had good moments, bad moments and it got decided by a penalty that from our point of view wasn’t a penalty. It’s gone so quick, I’ve no idea how it looked in slow motion but unfortunately, we couldn’t get the points to bring it back to Liverpool.

"It is tough to take in general, conceding goals, but we know that they are in the best moment of their lives. They’ve lost one but apart from that they’ve had a great season and it’s always going to be tough. We had good moments, created chances at time, it’s hard to lose it by a penalty but we have to deal with it"

The Gunners will certainly be hoping it isn't the "best moment of their lives" as they look to continue their great form heading into a busy part of the schedule.
