Vice President Kamala Harris is a proud Howard University alumna.
The school’s men’s basketball team won the regular-season Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference title and punched a ticket to the NCAA tournament by winning the MEAC tournament. It was a big deal for the Bison, who hadn’t appeared in the Big Dance since 1992.
Howard received a No. 16 seed and a tough draw against top-seeded Kansas in the West Region.
Although the Bison were big underdogs against the Jayhawks, Harris showed up to Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines, Iowa on Thursday to support her alma mater in March Madness.
Strangely, the internet took notice when TBS cameras focused on Harris and a man standing behind her who appeared to lean in and sniff the Vice President.
Fortunately, there was a perfectly reasonable explanation for what appeared to be a bizarre situation.
As it turns out, the man actually was leaning in to speak with a woman standing behind Harris who wasn’t visible in the initial clip.
Kansas went on to win the game, 96–68, but the Bison can feel good about reaching the Big Dance and ending the school’s NCAA tournament drought.
