'Violent' Nottingham robber who attacked five women sentenced

A violent robber who assaulted lone women has been sentenced to an indefinite hospital order. Dwaine McDonald used violence towards five women and attempted to use violence towards another victim during incidents between February 13 and February 16 this year.

One of his victims, a 60-year-old woman, was walking to a bus stop on her way to work when she was attacked by the 34-year-old during the early hours of February 14. McDonald approached the woman and demanded for her to give him her phone and asked her to give him a pound.

He followed her as she walked across the road before punching her to the face, causing pain and discomfort. He then punched her again while she was on the ground.

A car then pulled up which caused McDonald to walk away empty-handed. McDonald, of Basford Road, Old Basford, hit a 22-year-old woman over the head with a brick and punched her in the face during a robbery later the same morning in the Arboretum.

The victim was walking along Forest Road East, towards Waterloo Promenade, when she was attacked at around 9.40am. She tried to fight off McDonald after he grabbed her handbag but he stole it and ran off after hitting her to the face, causing her to fall to the floor.

McDonald attacked another woman, aged 20, in the Radford area during the early hours of February 13. He punched her in the face before stealing her bag after pulling it off her shoulder.

He also committed an attempted robbery having followed two women home after they got off a tram in the Arboretum. He tried to steal a bag from one of them and attempted to hit her friend in the face before walking off following the incident which happened at around 2pm on February 14.

Another victim was stood at a bus stop in Old Basford at around 11.30am the next day when McDonald demanded items from her and tried to take her phone. He punched the 24-year-old victim in the face before people came to her aid and he walked off.

He also punched a 23-year-old woman in the face after she got off a tram in Wilkinson Street, New Basford, and tried to take her phone. He walked off after she screamed for help. McDonald, who was located and arrested on February 16, went on to plead guilty to two counts of robbery and four counts of attempted robbery.

He also pleaded guilty to an overnight house burglary in the Old Basford area he committed between February 15 and 16. Stolen items were recovered after police searched his home.

McDonald was sentenced to an indefinite hospital order when he appeared at Nottingham Crown Court for sentencing on Wednesday (August 24). Detective Sergeant Franco Guddemi, of Nottinghamshire Police, said: "I hope this sentencing can give McDonald’s victims the closure they need after the very frightening ordeals they went through.

“This was a particularly violent series of robberies, which had a severe impact on all the victims involved. I hope it brings them some comfort now McDonald has been safely detained and a violent offender has been taken off the streets.

“There is no place for appalling behaviour like this within our society in Nottingham or Nottinghamshire. I’d like to reassure people that Nottinghamshire Police treats these sort of crimes extremely seriously and will always exhaust every line of enquiry in order to apprehend suspects and put them before the courts to face justice.”

"I would like to thank all police officers – police staff and members of the public involved for bringing McDonald to justice."
