Violent Glasgow stranger breaks man's leg and boots him in the face after asking for money

A thug who fractured a generous stranger's leg has been jailed.

Ryan Cartwright, 31, turned on Andrew Gordon, 52, in Glasgow city centre when he approached him and asked for money.

The pair ended up arguing and Cartwright kicked the victim on the knee the booted his face.

The incident took place over a year after he was released from a four-and-a-half year High Court prison sentence for waterboarding a man in Clydebank.

Cartwright, also of Clydebank, pled guilty at Glasgow Sheriff Court to the assault to Mr Gordon's severe injury, permanent disfigurement and impairment on June 26, 2021.

The court heard that Mr Gordon was returning from a rugby match when he came across Cartwright on St Vincent Street.

Prosecutor Mark Allan said: "He approached Mr Gordon and asked him for money and he was given a couple of pounds."

The duo then went into a nearby newsagents where an argument spilled out on to the street.

Mr Allan stated: "He kicked Mr Gordon on his left knee causing him collapse to the ground after the knee gave way.

"He was not able to stand up because of the damage caused to the knee.

"Mr Gordon was then kicked on the face by Cartwright."

Cartwright fled the scene as Mr Gordon was taken to hospital.

He later underwent surgery for a fractured tibia and fibula.

Mr Gordon was released from hospital days later on crutches with a 12-inch scar to his leg.

Cartwright was traced meantime and was arrested.

Paul Sweeney, defending, told the court that Cartwright had a "cocktail" of alcohol and drugs that day.

Sentencing Cartwright to 33 months in jail, Sheriff Paul Reid said: "Realistically, given the nature of these offences, the long standing impact on the victim and your long appalling record of eight violent previous convictions, I have no other option but to impose a custodial sentence."
