For Viola Davis, the place where she grew up remains part of her story, even after a career that has taken her from Rhode Island to Hollywood. The award-winning actress and her husband, Julius Tennon, have announced a $1.2 million investment in Central Falls, the Rhode Island community where Davis once lived. The money will fund a new family engagement centre named after her mother, Mary Alice Davis, whose influence Davis has spoken about in explaining the project. Planned as a permanent base for local services, the centre will bring together food assistance, family support, adult education and employment-related programmes under one roof.
